It seems like this is not the best fit for his preference. A preference assessment would conclude that he is not recieving enough meaning rewards from the environment. Requesting an adjustment from the training opportunity would be helpful. Also showing John that we can earn reinforcers from doing his job efficiently may be beneficial. Adding in a reward system

He may need reminders form a job coach in the beginning or a self monitoring program.

John needs to be moved to bagging groceries or greeting others if possible. If those positions are not possible at this training opportunity, the behavior analyst should find a placement that offers those type of placements.

Reframe the work opportunity. Try to embed options for socialization so he's able to complete the tasks and gain the social access he's looking for.

A couple of thoughts come to mind. It sounds like this is not a skill deficit, but more of a performance deficit. Because social interactions are desirable, perhaps a break time of doing a different responsibilities where customers or other workers are present could be utilized. Training with multiple exemplars might be helpful as well. Showing him when it is appropriate to be socializing when it is not.

Help John identify times that he can interact with peers (break/lunch times) and times when it is not appropriate to engage. Support John in finding employment that matches his interests levels

The job needs to include the learner's interest. This is important so that the likelihood of success is higher because motivation to perform the skill accurately will be higher.

Add programming for appropriate interactions in the workplace. Advocate for placement at the checkout line.

Meaninful interactions with peers need to be scheduled during work breaks.

Provide instruction to 1:1 staff on how to facilitate social interaction

See if the placement can include more direct time for John with the customers. In addition social skills could be taught to help John identify a set period of time to interact with the customers and look for cues when they may need help.

May need to seek out a different placement where he can interact with others in his environment; provide supports to try and make the current placement more effective-social stories, reinforcement set up for engaging appropriately in his job, etc.
