Sharing Inspiration
Consider your own experiences with supporting inclusion. This might include effective solutions, or missed opportunities that you see differently now that some time has passed.
Use the sharing board below to share an experience helping a client adjust and thrive in a new environment, or just find inspiration from the experiences others have shared.

SHARING BOARD

Teaching sharing, waiting and small talk skills with a client in a model and eventually in community setting. Worked on how to make small talk, cues to look for and how to address disagreement.

Inclusion is so very important especially within the young adult age, transitioning from high school. While working on a person centered plan for a client in the self-determination program, I understand that finding job placement highlighting current skill sets and preferences is key. This increases motivation to learn and adapt to certain environmental constraints. But when there is a will, there is a way. So rewarding to see a client thrive and show genuine happiness because they are placed in an enriched environment filled with opportunity to grow and receive natural positive reinforcement.

Have a lunch meeting and let the students lead on the activity to do.

I worked with a client whose residential organization had a weekly coffee date at the local coffee shop. All of the individuals participated in the event and it was a great way to engage. Because this became so regular, the employees and other customers at the shop came to know the individuals in the group and this led to some new friendships.

I will focus more on better assessing what can be done independently.

Parent demanded student with an IEP be included in the general education setting. Initially, we did not have the buy-in from the school administration and teachers and the student was “invited” to be part of the classroom without an effort to include and support him. As the BCBA I needed to do work closely with the school personnel, student and parents to make this experience a success to all parties involved.

Inclusion will always be the best option for long-term mental health and wellbeing, but can only be successful with adequate supports and a culture of acceptance.

I’ve been working at a school for two years, and this course has given me additional strategies that I can use more effectively when working with clients.
Give teachers grace as they sometimes may become overwhelmed with managing large classes.

For some parents, it’s very important to have their input as part of the school plan. Be sure to check in with the child’s family to get their input and share how their child is doing in school.
